Day 2

The second day of the internship began with a morning meeting where Joe told the general rundown for the day. Once it ended, all of the interns split off to their specific lab groups. Joe then gave Anoop and I a more thorough description of our lab, as well as giving us a general list of items to complete and establishing the questions that we are trying to answer by the end of the internship. We are trying to determine whether it is possible to use broadcasting footage as the basis of a hockey analytics system, and we are also trying to determine the advantages/disadvantages of using broadcasting footage rather than stationary fixed focal length cameras. We were then given more resources to research the topic such as the work that the freshman have completed (they used a stationary camera). Anoop and I spent the day reading through various materials, trying to create a base understanding for us to work off of. We also watched some of the broadcasting footage to determine whether there were any frames where there were no identifying features (shown in the picture) that would allow the program to discern where in the hockey area each player was located. We had lunch, and then continued to go through various documents including the research, videos, diagrams collected by the freshman class. Overall, I feel like I have a decent understanding of the task at hand.
